Ray Fitzpatrick was appointed University Lecturer in the University of Oxford in 1986, having previously worked in the Department of Neurological Sciences, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, followed by the Academic Department of Psychiatry, Middlesex Hospital Medical School. From 1998-2003 he served on the Council of Medical Research Council, and as Chair of the MRC’s Public Health and Health Services Research Board. From 1996, he was Professor of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Oxford. He served two periods as Head of the University’s Department of Public Health.

He was Fellow and Dean, Nuffield College, Oxford. He was National Programme Director, NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research. He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, Arthritis Research UK. He was Deputy Director of a Department of Health and Social Care Policy Research Unit (‘Quality, Safety Outcomes of Health and Social Care’ (QSO)). He was a principal investigator and theme leader for the NIHR Oxford & Thames Valley Applied Research Collaboration (ARC). The focus of his research was on evaluation of health and social care services, and the use of evidence from patient reported outcomes and measures of health status and patient experience.
