INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

This is an exciting career-enhancing opportunity to advance a University-wide interdisciplinary programme in global health research. Working closely with the Director of Global Health, the Associate Director will oversee the programmatic activities of Oxford Global Health (OGH) and the OGH Core Team by mobilising interdisciplinary research teams to tackle pressing global challenges through convening, networking and building collaboration at the highest level. The Associate Director will support the Director in actively pursuing fundraising opportunities from philanthropy and major funders.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, mid or senior career researcher internationally recognised for their research in global heath and their ability to work effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders. OGH aims to build connections across the Global Health research community at the University of Oxford (including its overseas units), enhance the visibility of Oxford Global Health externally, and champion key challenge areas (initially Malaria, Fungi, and Climate change and mental health).  While the Director will take a lead on external-facing activity, the Associate Director will play a leading role in convening and connecting activities within the University.

Responsibilities of the Associate Director will include co-chairing the OGH Executive Committee, which reports to the Steering Committee, developing future themes, and leading on partnering with the Africa Oxford Initiative to develop visiting fellowships for early career researchers in global health from Africa.

The role of the OGH Executive Committee is to collaborate on operational needs and support collaborative working, funding applications and network building amongst researchers. The work of OGH is underpinned by a professional support core team (2.5FTE) who support the Director and Associate Director in their roles.

This is a unique opportunity to gain skills directing a complex and strategic interdisciplinary global health research programme, working alongside researchers at all career stages and a professional support team. We anticipate the time commitment of this role will be 1 day per week. Appointments are made for 2 years in the first instance. A responsibility allowance and/or buy out will be available by negotiation. Applicants must discuss their application with their Head of Department before submission.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Bernstein: enquiries@globalhealth.ox.ac.uk

The Oxford Global Health initiative supports the University’s commitment in fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equality and values diversity. We are eager to receive applications from a diverse pool of candidates.

To apply for this role please send covering letter (maximum 3 pages) and CV to divoff.jobs@medsc.ox.ac.uk by 12 noon Wed 8 January 2025. Interviews will be held in the week commencing 27th January 2025.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  • An excellent academic track-record in a relevant research domain, capacity to lead, and license to operate broadly across departments and disciplines, evidenced by international academic reputation and/or academic leadership roles. Track record will be assessed relative to career stage and we welcome applications from senior and mid-career researchers with appropriate experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Global Health sector, including the breadth of different disciplines working in this area.
  • Able to build consensus and effective relationships with multiple senior stakeholders with differing priorities, both within and beyond the University, using tact and discretion where necessary, and influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Experience of coordinating and implementing interdisciplinary collaboration.

Desirable

  • Experience of leadership roles, serving on national and international relevant external boards or panels.
  • Experience working in low and middle-income countries.
  • Evidence of developing and implementing strategy for better working across multiple internal structures.
  • An existing track record of external connections to Global Health funders, industrial partners and organisations.
  • Experience of financial planning and budget management.

Candidates should have a strong interest in the mission of Oxford Global Health and bring complementary experience to the Director, who has a health sciences background focused on cancer research, virology and haematopoiesis, a leadership background as a president of interdisciplinary national and international research organisations, and who brings extensive convening experience in addition to contributions to boards and committees.
