Veena Mazarello Paes

Veena’s research focuses on epidemiology and global public health. She is currently involved with research in health systems development and improving trauma care standards particularly in low- and middle-income countries. She co-authored four of NICE’s (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) clinical practice guidelines on acute care. She  has presented and published her research internationally.

In 2021  Veena was appointed as an academic at the University of Oxford, and collaborates on multiple national and international projects. She tutors postgraduate students and leads on research methods training courses and workshops for clinicians, postgraduate and undergraduate students.

She is also a governor at two schools.

Previously, she held academic positions at Cambridge Institute of Public Health, Centre for European Policy Studies, Imperial College London, St George's University of London, The Royal College of Surgeons of England, UCL, and University of Cambridge.

She also held scientific and editorial positions in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and publishing industries.

She completed her NIHR/DoH funded MPhil and PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from UCL; a master’s degree in public health (MPH) from Imperial College London; and an intercalated post graduate diploma and training in Health Systems Development from the WHO collaborating Centre at Imperial College London and the WHO, Geneva.
