UNIVERSITY SERVICE
Biography
Dr Roger Nascimento teaches in the MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine, an interdisciplinary course of the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health, University of Oxford. His anthropological research in medical work and medical education is focused on race and religion. He is interested in contemporary professional practices and professionalism among religious and minority communities, and their learning experiences in international professional education systems.
Roger observes workers in professional occupations in multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, international, or cross-cultural situations. He is interested in examining how past and current ideas and practices of professional work can help us make sense of our human condition, cultural predicament, and social values. His analyses of professional experiences contribute to imagining new perspectives on global public health practice, continuous professional education strategies, international higher education management, and international cooperation for health, development and human rights.
Roger is intellectually committed to anti-racist approaches to (and interventions in) scholarship, leadership, and governance. He conducts participant-observation studies to investigate positive action initiatives aimed at tackling historical racial injustices, contemporary inequities, and foreseeable persistent disparities. He also employs literature and archive research to review early accounts of anti-racist policies and recent experiences of diversity mainstreaming in leadership development among racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, national, political, occupational, sexual, gender, and ability minority groups.
