BIOGRAPHY

Aris is a Professor of Fetal Medicine and the Clinical Research Director of the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute. He leads a number of research projects focused in the areas of maternal, fetal and perinatal health and using diverse methods - including basic science, clinical epidemiology, trials, knowledge transfer and implementation science. A major research interests is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in pregnancy imaging and screening, and for several years he has worked with biomedical engineers on these problems. Through this work, Aris co-founded the Oxford University spin-out, Intelligent Ultrasound.

Aris is a prolific academic with over 350 original articles, over 18,000 citations and an h-index of 73.

He studied medicine at the University of Sheffield; he was a Research Fellow at the Harris Birthright Research Centre for Fetal Medicine at King’s College, from where he obtained his MD on large scale population screening for the prediction of pre-eclampsia. He completed his obstetric training in London with specialisation in both Obstetrics & Gynaecology; and Subspecialist training in Maternal & Fetal Medicine, whilst a lecturer at St George's, University of London.

He is Deputy Editor-in-Chief for BJOG; National Chair of the Expert Working Group in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK; and a visiting Professor at Capital Medical University in Beijing. At ISUOG he served as Trustee, Chair of the Scientific Committee and as Honorary Secretary, and he was awarded the ISUOG fellowship in 2019. He has received an Honorary Membership of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Athens.

Aris divides his time, and he works clinically at St George’s Hospital in London, as Professor in Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics. His clinical special interests include all aspects of fetal medicine and ultrasound, fetal growth and pre-eclampsia, non-invasive and invasive prenatal diagnosis, and fetal therapy.
