Message from our Director
The launch of the initiative in global health, Oxford Global Health, is an exciting moment for the University and for me personally. Oxford has a justifiably proud history of excellence in global health that spans the entire university. The pandemic focussed the world's attention on the great strengths in vaccine and clinical sciences with the RECOVERY trial and the Oxford vaccine, whilst the social sciences and humanities have been key to understanding the rise in vaccine hesitancy and the misinformation and disinformation that accompanied the great scientific successes in bringing the pandemic under control.
When I was asked to become the first Director of Global Health, I welcomed the opportunity. The health challenges facing humanity today are increasingly complex and require the perspectives of multiple disciplines. As a world leader in global health, the University of Oxford is in a strong position to deliver innovative and meaningful solutions to many of the world's biggest global health challenges. Oxford Global Health will continue Oxford’s strong culture of working in partnership with local communities, funders, universities and institutions to make a difference and benefit people around the world.
I look forward to bringing together colleagues across the University of Oxford and elsewhere to address the complex global health challenges of the 21st century.
Professor Alan Bernstein C.C., OOnt., PhD, FRSC, FCAHS
